This book is all about making a difference. The protagonist of this story is Dr. P. K. Gopalakrishnan (PKG) who was born into humble surroundings, in the backdrop of a nation fighting for her independence from an oppressive regime. Societal inequities may have caused him to gravitate towards Marxian philosophies and communism, but in greater measure he also idolised Gandhiji and Sree Narayana Guru. The exemplary student and learner that he was, he soon realised that emancipation from this morass was possible only through higher education and he steadfastly pursued this dream against severe odds, to eventually crown his learning with a PhD in Economics from the University of Amsterdam, where he closely associated with Nobel Laureate Jan Tinbergen. Equipped with a doctorate he returned to India, determined to serve his motherland in every capacity he could. After itinerant short assignments across the country, he was eventually absorbed by the Kerala State Government. His exposure to industrialised Europe, during his student days, had only enhanced his belief that incorporation of Science & Technology at every level was paramount to any aspiration for development. In the decade of the 1970-s, when he had the opportunity to work under the Chief Minister C. Achutha Menon-it was the union of two kindred souls that launched the State of Kerala into a quantum leap of development, hitherto unseen in the state or even in the country. The pragmatic and determined duo founded what later came to be known as the 'Kerala Model of Development-aided and driven by a sub-stratum of new scientific and research institutions that fed the developmental plans of the state. Thus it was that the now renowned institutions like SCTIMST, CDS, CWRDM, CESS, JNTBGRI, Keltron, NATPAC, KFRI and others were born. PKG always kept a low profile and never sought accolades or recognition for his phenomenal achievements. He was always the greenroom worker who never donned the greasepaint to appear on stage to receive the applause. However, his story needs to be told for lessons need to be learnt by the bureaucrats of today, who would do well to aspire to mulate this role model and make a difference as PKG did.
