The Reforms:The Mantra That Beguiled a Nation
P P Rajagopalan
The mischief and the malevolent intentions of the perpetrators of the Reforms: Caused humongous wealth drain With the trickle-down economics, gap between the rich and the poor became worrisomely high! In a world awash with investable capital looking for opportunity, India was beguiled to believe in the salvation of embracing foreign capital, euphemistically termed FDI and FII.
cornering wealth has became the way to get rich. Subverted the poor people's democracy and turned it elitist. Allowed backdoor entry to private business in legislation and budgeting. Converted business associations (e.g. BSE) and service organizations (e.g. CDSL, NSDL) into rent seeking private business. Foreign capital captured them. Enslaved the government to get policy making subservient to the foreign interest and their capital. Foreign speculators (FIIs) raided and conquered Indian bourses to convert the stock market into a veritable gambling den! Made suckers of the Indian middle class! • Import liberalisation, technology transfer and FDI stifled innovation and indigenous Technology development. Scrapped the idea of indigenization and making the very mention of that word itself farcical. Coaxed and compelled India to sign bilateral treaties and join multilateral organizations which benefited others immensely, where we gained little. Hiding behind the sham, Public Private Partnership (PPP), contractors collected booty. Wheeling and dealing brokers, ruled the roost. Labour contractors mushroomed and contract labour boomed. Parasitic businesses flourished (e.g. Insurance). Swindling, fraud and corruption increased manifold to become scams manifestation of the liberalization of the banking and finance rules and procedures.
